Our Vision
A wind industry where data is securely and sovereignly shared across Cloud-Edge infrastructures to drive innovation, sustainability, and competitiveness throughout the entire value chain.
Our Mission
Wind-X develops a federated, decentralized data space for the wind industry that enables digital twins, traceability across the supply chain, and data-driven services. By fostering open standards and interoperability, Wind-X empowers industry, research, and policy stakeholders to create new business models and accelerate the energy transition.

Building a decentralized Cloud-Edge data space to enable new digital business models
Wind-X is an industry-driven project designed to create a federated, decentralized data space for the wind industry. Its objective is to unlock new digital business models through the secure and sovereign sharing of turbine and operational data, strengthening competitiveness by improving efficiency and flexibility across production and the full lifecycle of wind turbines.
The project is part of the Important Project of Common European Interest – Cloud Infrastructure and Services (IPCEI-CIS) and draws on synergies with Manufacturing-X, Catena-X, Gaia-X, and 8RA initiatives. Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Wind-X has a budget of €6 million and a runtime of 33 months. Over 20 companies from the wind value chain—including manufacturers, suppliers, and operators—are involved. The consortium leader is Siemens Energy, with VDMA Power Systems and MEWS consulting acting as the project initiator and responsible for stakeholder management and transfer methodologies.
Why Wind-X matters:
Competitiveness and efficiency: By creating a cost-effective, decentralized data ecosystem, Wind-X enables companies to exchange information without losing control or authorship of their data.
Resilience and transparency: The project strengthens supply chain resilience through more adaptable and transparent processes.
Interoperability and sovereignty: Establishing digital interoperability and data sovereignty within the wind industry.
Regulatory background:
The EU Data Act, entering into force in September 2025, shifts data usage rights significantly toward customers: operational data from products with sensors or chips will belong to the users rather than the manufacturers. This regulatory change prevents data monopolies and opens opportunities for new business models. Wind-X will develop a demonstrator to showcase how shared data can be leveraged for innovative applications in wind energy and machinery manufacturing.
By transferring lessons and technologies from other major European initiatives such as Manufacturing-X, Catena-X, Gaia-X, and IPCEI-CIS, Wind-X ensures that the wind industry benefits from proven approaches to data spaces, Cloud-Edge infrastructure, and standardization. In doing so, the project contributes to making Europe’s wind industry more competitive, sustainable, and future-ready.
Affiliate Projects and Initiatives
Wind-X builds on the technologies, standards, and experiences of Manufacturing-X, Catena-X, and Gaia-X, transferring proven concepts for data sovereignty and interoperability into the wind industry.
As part of the IPCEI-CIS program, Wind-X aligns with Europe’s broader Cloud-Edge strategy, ensuring compatibility and synergies across leading industrial data space initiatives.

Unlocking the Future of Wind: Traceability, Digital Twins, and New Business Models
Use Case 1 – Traceability for Sustainability and Logistics
Wind-X enables end-to-end traceability across the entire wind energy supply chain, making material origins, production processes, and logistics fully transparent.
This improves sustainability reporting, optimizes logistics planning, and strengthens supply chain resilience in line with ESG and regulatory requirements.
Use Case 2 – Digital Twin in Production and in the Field
By creating comprehensive digital twins of turbines and components, Wind-X connects design, manufacturing, and operational data in one ecosystem.
These virtual representations enable predictive maintenance, faster troubleshooting, and improved lifecycle management — reducing downtime and costs.
New Business Models
The Wind-X data space provides a secure environment for companies to share and monetize operational data without losing ownership or control.
This opens opportunities for innovative services such as performance optimization, condition-based maintenance contracts, and data-driven supply chain solutions.
